How does the automatic enhancement actually work?
The tool builds a brightness histogram of your photo and stretches the tonal range so the darkest 0.5% of pixels become black and the brightest 0.5% become white. It then applies a gray-world white balance to neutralize color casts, a mild saturation boost, and a small gamma correction based on the image’s median brightness. Each correction is written to its slider, so you can see exactly what was changed.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The image is decoded, analyzed, and processed entirely in your browser using the canvas element, and the download is generated on your device. Nothing is transmitted anywhere, which also means the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
Why do the sliders start at non-zero values?
Those are the values the automatic analysis computed for your specific photo — they are the enhancement. Starting the sliders there lets you see what was adjusted and nudge any single correction up or down instead of accepting or rejecting everything at once. Turning the Auto enhance toggle off returns every slider to neutral.
Does the preview quality match the downloaded file?
The live preview runs on a downscaled copy of your image so it stays responsive while you drag sliders. When you download, the same corrections are recomputed on the original pixels at full resolution, so the saved PNG or JPG contains no preview-related quality loss.
When does auto enhancement not help?
Photos that already use the full tonal range gain little from contrast stretching, and images that are intentionally tinted — sunsets, stage lighting, product shots on colored backgrounds — can be over-corrected by gray-world white balance. In those cases pull the warmth slider back toward zero or switch the auto toggle off and adjust manually. Heavily overexposed skies cannot be recovered because clipped highlights contain no data.
