How it works
- Pick a mode: Free for open-ended counting, or a 5, 10, 30 or 60 second timed challenge.
- Press the spacebar on your keyboard — or tap the on-screen key on a phone — as fast as you can; timed modes start on your first press.
- Watch your total and clicks-per-second rate, then hit Reset to try to beat your best score.
Frequently asked questions
- How does the spacebar counter work?
- The page listens for spacebar keydown events and adds one to the counter for each distinct press. In timed modes the clock starts at your first press and stops automatically, then your total is divided by the duration to give a clicks-per-second rate.
- What is a good spacebar clicks-per-second score?
- Most people land between 5 and 8 presses per second in a 10 second test. Scores above 10 per second are fast, and short 5 second bursts usually produce higher rates than 60 second runs because your hand tires. Comparing runs of the same length is the fairest test.
- Does holding the spacebar down count as multiple presses?
- No. Key auto-repeat events are filtered out, so keeping the key held only registers once. You have to fully release and press the spacebar again for the next count, which keeps scores honest and comparable.
- Are my scores saved or sent anywhere?
- Best scores for each mode are stored only in your browser’s localStorage on your device. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account or leaderboard server, so clearing your browser data removes the scores.
- Can I use the spacebar counter on a phone or tablet?
- Yes. Touch devices have no physical spacebar, so the large on-screen key acts as the button — every tap counts as one press. Timed modes and best scores work exactly the same way on mobile.
About this tool
This spacebar counter tracks how many times you can press the space key and how fast you can do it. Use Free mode for an open-ended tally, or pick a timed challenge — 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds — to measure your presses per second. The timer only starts on your first press, so you are never penalized for getting ready, and the run ends automatically when time is up.
Everything happens in your browser. The page captures spacebar keydown events directly, ignores keyboard auto-repeat so a held key counts only once, and blocks the default page-scroll behavior of the space key so the layout stays still while you mash. Your best score for each mode is kept in localStorage on your own device; no data is transmitted anywhere and there is nothing to install.
Spacebar speed tests are popular with gamers who rely on rapid key presses for jumping, bunny hopping or combat abilities in titles like Minecraft and Fortnite, and they also work as a quick reflex warm-up before a session. Teachers and streamers use short 5 or 10 second rounds as a simple head-to-head game, since everyone faces the same timer and the per-second rate makes results easy to compare.
A few practical tips: shorter tests reward burst speed, while 30 and 60 second runs test endurance, so track your best in each mode separately. Many fast clickers use two alternating fingers or a light vibrating motion of the wrist rather than full up-and-down presses. On a laptop, pressing near the center of the spacebar registers most reliably; on a phone, hold the device in one hand and tap the on-screen key with the other.
