Frequently asked questions
- Why convert PNG to WebP?
- WebP keeps transparency like PNG but produces files that are typically 60–80% smaller, which makes it the best format for websites.
- Does converting PNG to WebP lose quality?
- At the default settings the result is visually indistinguishable from the PNG — WebP preserves transparency and sharp edges extremely well, and the file is still usually a fraction of the original size.
- Are my images uploaded to a server?
- No. All compression happens locally in your browser. Your images never leave your device, which also makes the process instant — there is no upload or download wait.
- Will compressing reduce image quality?
- Compression removes data your eyes barely notice. At the default settings the difference is invisible in normal viewing. You can adjust the quality level under Options if you need finer control.
- Can I convert many files at once?
- Yes. Drop any number of files and each is converted independently — there are no batch limits or daily quotas, because processing runs on your own device.
About this tool
WebP was designed by Google as a modern replacement for both JPG and PNG on the web, and PNG-to-WebP is where it shows its biggest wins: the same transparency support at file sizes typically 60–80% smaller. For logos, UI assets, screenshots and product images with transparent backgrounds, WebP loads dramatically faster with no visible difference. Every current browser — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge — renders WebP natively, so for website use there is little reason left to serve PNG.
Conversion happens entirely in your browser: each PNG file is decoded locally and re-encoded as WebP using the browser’s own image engine, so nothing is uploaded and the result is ready the moment you drop the file. Batch conversion works the same way — add as many files as you like and download each result individually.
Because no server is involved, there are no file size limits, no daily quotas and no privacy questions: photos, design assets and documents never leave your device. Open Options if you want to fine-tune the output before downloading.
