Frequently asked questions
- Do the QR codes expire?
- No. The QR code encodes your text directly — there is no shortening service in between, so it works forever and does not depend on this site existing.
- Is the QR code watermarked or tracked?
- No. It is generated locally in your browser, contains exactly what you typed and nothing else, and we never see it.
- What can I encode?
- Any text up to about 2,900 characters: URLs, plain text, phone numbers (tel:+1234567890), or Wi-Fi credentials (WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:password;;).
- Why won’t my QR code scan?
- The usual causes are low contrast, printing too small, or encoding a very long URL that makes the module grid too dense. Use dark modules on a light background, keep a clear margin around the code, and test with a phone camera before printing in bulk.
- What size should I use for print?
- Download the largest PNG offered and let your layout software scale it down. As a rule of thumb, print at least 2 × 2 cm for close-range scanning, and larger if the code will be scanned from a distance — roughly one tenth of the scanning distance.
About this tool
A QR code is text encoded as a grid of black and white modules that any camera can read — a URL, a phone number, Wi-Fi credentials or any message up to a few thousand characters. Built-in error correction lets a code keep scanning even when partly obscured or damaged, which is why QR codes work reliably on posters, packaging, receipts and screens. Scanning is built into every modern phone camera — no app needed — which has made QR codes the default bridge from print to the web.
This generator produces static QR codes: your text is encoded directly into the pattern, with no shortening or redirect service in between. That means the code never expires, is never tracked, and keeps working even if this site disappears — unlike many “free” generators that route scans through their own servers and later put the redirect behind a paywall. Everything is generated locally in your browser; we never see what you encode.
Beyond plain links, phones recognize several payload formats automatically: tel:+1234567890 starts a call, mailto:hello@example.com opens a draft email, and WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:password;; connects to a Wi-Fi network — handy for guest networks in cafés, offices and rentals. Plain text works too: menus, serial numbers, event details.
For print, download a large PNG and keep three things in mind: dark modules on a light background scan far better than the reverse, the white margin around the code (the quiet zone) must stay clear, and shorter text produces a coarser, more forgiving grid. Always test-scan a printed sample before producing anything in volume.
